120+ app audits with Steve P. Young's App Masters team

Every audit is done by hand.
I'm Akanksha Barma, and I've completed 120+ mobile app audits as part of Steve P. Young's team at App Masters.
After reviewing hundreds of app journeys, paywalls, onboarding flows, and monetization experiences, I've built a framework and repository of paywall patterns, tests, and conversion opportunities that I now use to audit apps.
Apps I've audited
Is this you?
The audit is built for one specific moment in an app's life — right after you've found traction.
You've launched on the App Store
A real, live iOS app that people can download today — not a prototype or waitlist.
You're growing ~50+ users a day
Enough consistent traffic that your funnel and paywall are being tested for real, every day.
You suspect you're leaving money on the table
Downloads are coming, but trials, conversions, and revenue aren't keeping pace.
Pre-launch or still chasing your first users? Come back once you're growing steadily — that's when a funnel audit pays for itself.
Most founders chase more downloads. The money is in the middle.
Every step between install and paid loses users. Small leaks compound — a weak onboarding and a soft paywall can quietly halve your revenue before you ever see it.

What I'll analyze
A deep dive into every step between install and paid, delivered as a written report and a Loom walkthrough within 7 days.
Your complete user journey
From first impression → onboarding → activation → paywall → purchase, I'll identify friction, confusion, and conversion opportunities.
Your paywall & monetization
I'll evaluate your pricing presentation, offer structure, plans, trials, CTAs, value communication, and overall paywall experience against proven patterns and tests.
Your onboarding & activation
Identify unnecessary friction, missed opportunities to demonstrate value, and points where users may be dropping off before reaching the "aha" moment.
Your competitors
I'll analyze relevant competitor flows to identify patterns worth learning from — and opportunities to differentiate.
Prioritized recommendations
You won't get a long list of generic CRO advice. Recommendations are prioritized by potential impact and implementation difficulty, so you know what to tackle first.
What you walk away with
A clear answer to:
“What should I change first to improve my app's conversion?”

A real sample audit
Every audit follows the same eight-part structure. Here's a look inside one, for a iOS app we'll call Test App.

The short version
The app is winning installs but not subscribers. New users are asked to create an account before they see any value. The paywall appears only after opt-in, never during onboarding, and its first screen shows no benefits or social proof.
Every competitor I reviewed shows a paywall inside onboarding. That's the biggest single gap.
Top 3 fixes
- 01P0
Show a paywall inside onboarding
Make it the last step, while intent is highest.
- 02P0
Show value before asking for an account
Move personalisation ahead of sign-up.
- 03P1
Rework the paywall's first screen, then test price
Benefits and social proof above the plans.
03 · Onboarding · Findings
Show value first, ask later, and always make an offer
- 1Screens 02–03
Observation
The app opens on a map preview and a "Create an account" button. Sign-up comes before any feature is shown.
Gap
Users are asked to commit before they've seen value. This is where most of them leave.
Recommendation
Show 2–3 value screens first (spots, conditions, hatch data). Ask for an account when the user wants to save something.
P0 - 2Screens 04–05
Observation
Goal and persona questions come after sign-up.
Gap
Before sign-up, these questions build trust and investment. After it, they feel like admin.
Recommendation
Move the questions ahead of account creation, and reflect the answers back later ("Picked for weekend warriors").
P1 - 3Screens 06–07
Observation
After location permission, users land on the home screen. No paywall appears at any point in onboarding.
Gap
The moment of highest intent passes with no offer. Every competitor reviewed shows one here.
Recommendation
Add a paywall as the last onboarding step, personalised with the user's answers.

How it works
01
Tell us about your app
Your App Store listing, category, and where you are today. Takes a few minutes.
02
Share your app data
Paywall and onboarding screens, plus your downloads and revenue trends — the raw material of the audit.
03
